Vein Sclerotherapy may be the answer

Sclerotherapy is the treatment of unsightly varicose veins and spider veins using non-surgical techniques. Sclerotherapy uses medical micro injections to treat these veins on a walk in walk out basis.

This is done for both cosmetic and medical reasons.

What are Varicose and Spider Veins Sclerotherapy?

Varicose veins are enlarged leg veins, and Spider veins are small versions of varicose veins. Even early varicose and spider veins can be a unsightly cosmetic problem. All enlarged veins can also lead to further problems and symptoms, including heaviness of the legs, swelling, cramping, and aching legs. If left unattended the problem can progress to discolouration and eventually, leg ulcers can occur.

What is Sclerotherapy?

Sclerotherapy is injection treatment of minor veins for cosmetic purposes. It is the treatment of choice to get rid of unsightly threads veins on the legs. These veins are often referred to as 'spider veins' or 'broken capillaries'. While a total clearance of these vessels is unlikely, a 70-80% improvement is often achievable.

What Does the Treatment Involve?

A special sclerosing solution is injected directly into the vessels, causing a reaction that will eventually destroy them. Although the treatment involves injections, the needle used is very fine, so pain is not generally a problem. There may be some stinging as the solution travels through smaller vessels but this is also quite tolerable.

Treatments are carried out at the Clinic and patients are able to return to normal daytime activities immediately afterwards. Support stockings are usually worn for three days afterwards. If additional treatments are necessary, these are usually done at two – three weekly intervals.

Treatment Options

If you have minor veins that are causing cosmetic problems and bothering you , you may be suitable for injection sclerotherapy. More advanced disease may require referral for a Vascular Surgeon opinion.

What is the approximate cost of treatment?

Sclerotherapy for spider veins costs $400 per treatment, with 1-3 treatments usually needed. A Medicare rebate is often available covering part of the cost of each treatment (depending on the type of veins you have).
