Why does Skin Age?

Skin ageing is mainly caused by sun damage and is hence more accurately described as photoageing. Other causes of wrinkles include smoking, squinting and overactive facial expressions.

The effects of UV light on skin are widespread:
  • Texture:Thickening and roughening of the skin
  • Pigmentation: freckles, age spots and blotchiness
  • Wrinkles: Loss of collagen and elastic fibres in the deep layers of skin
  • Veins: Spider veins on the face
  • Solar Keratoses and Skin Cancers

Skin Repair Creams

Fine wrinkles and some pigmentation abnormalities can be treated with a combination of prescription and cosmetic products. These include Retin-A, AHAs ( fruit acids), hydroquinone ( a bleacher), antioxidants etc. You will need a personalized regime, otherwise skin irritation is common. These products will give only modest improvements, and are most useful for maintenance after cosmetic medicine procedures.

Prevention

Finally, a good preventive regime is essential. There is no point trying to reverse facial ageing if the underlying causes remain. Significant UV exposure occurs on cloudy days and when going about your day to day activities, not just when sunbaking.
  1. UV protection: stay out of the sun where possible, wear a hat and make sure a sunscreen/moisturizer with SPF 15 –30 is part of your daily routine.
  2. Stop smoking
  3. Minimize squinting. Use sunglasses
  4. Facial expressions. Try and stay calm and relaxed!

Where Do I Start?

It is important you consult a Cosmetic Physician or dermatologist for an individual assessment. The treatments you will need depend on your skin type and age, the degree of photodamage present and your main cosmetic concerns.
